The river is our teacher

AWA offers immersive and engaging learning opportunities. Students can explore and learn about the Waikato River, our geothermal landscapes, and our sustainable energy initiatives, while experiencing the deep connection Ngati Tahu–Ngati Whaoa have with our rohe (territory). Designed for students of all ages, the programme places the taiao at the heart of learning, where the river becomes the classroom and the natural world the teacher.

The relationship between people and place

Learn how Ngati Tahu–Ngati Whaoa live in relationship with the land, caring for the environment as kin. Students come to understand the significance of the Waikato River, iwi (tribal) perspectives, and the histories that bind us to place.

The energy beneath our land and river

Beneath our whole rohe, intense geothermal energy pulses just below the surface. Learn how that energy is drawn up and turned into electricity and how that power has, in turn, supported the wellbeing of Ngati Tahu–Ngati Whaoa for generations.

Tourism and hospitality pathways

Students see the tourism and hospitality industry in action, from guiding and storytelling to hospitality and river safety, and learn how cultural knowledge shapes visitor experiences in Aotearoa. A first-hand look at career pathways in a growing industry, inspired by the people who work in it every day.

How does AWA connect to the curriculum?

AWA connects to Social Sciences, History, Geography, Science, Te Ao Māori, and Environmental Studies. We also offer Experience Options to suit your class's focus.

Is there a minimum age for the Manutaki experience?

Yes, Manutaki is suitable for ages 5+.

Is there a minimum height requirement?

Yes, participants must be at least 1 metre tall.

Do students need to be fit or experienced to take part?

No, AWA is suitable for all fitness levels.

How long does the Manutaki experience take?

The Manutaki experience itself takes approximately 35 minutes, but further programming around the ride can be tailored to your group’s educational needs.

Is the experience accessible?

To get onto the boat, you will need to walk down 25 steps to our jetty. While this means the jetty itself is not accessible to wheelchairs, please reach out to chat about how we can help get you to the boat, and if it’s the right ride for you. Call us on 0800 727 437 or use the contact form below.

Is there parking for coaches?
